About Niels Huisman

Raised in a musical household—his mother a choir singer, his father a pianist—Niels grew up surrounded by sound. After exploring much of the string section, he picked up a bass at age 12 and never really looked back.

A versatile low-end specialist on upright, fretted, and fretless electric bass, Niels has played everything from orchestral works and big band swing to modern jazz, rock, fusion, and musicals. From the concert hall to the club stage, he brings a grounded, adaptable presence and a deep respect for the pocket.

Niels has performed with a wide range of ensembles and artists, including Joe’s Big Band, Dusk, Sister Speak, and many pit orchestras including RENT, Mean Girls, and Matilda. He’s shared stages with players like Gabe Jarrett, Jerome Monachino, Bella Sances, and Josh Panda, and appeared at venues including the Barre Opera House, Nectar’s, the Flynn Theater, Jay Peak, and Quai des Brumes in Montreal.

He’s also a longtime member of the 40th Army Band (Vermont Army National Guard), performing since 2004 in ensembles including jazz combo, rock bands, ceremonial brass, and concert groups—covering upright bass, electric bass, percussion, and timpani. With the band, he’s played at venues such as Vienna’s Hofburg Palace, Fenway Park, the Vermont Statehouse, and events throughout Europe and the U.S.

Whether anchoring a trio, reading a big band chart, or weaving through a musical theater score, Niels is ready to serve the music.
